Painting 1 - The Four Watercolor Techniques

NOTES:

Questions

  • I have only ever seen water color as a solid circle inside of a palette, how does squeezing out of a tube work on a wet palette when you want to get different opacities?
  • How does the water angle support or affect the way a pigment lays on the paper?

Safety notes

  • fire safety —> exhaust flame, deprive of oxygen, stores anything flammable, mostly for oil painting —> cleaning, wear gloves like always
  • Metal trash cans to keep fire isolated if happens —> let lydia know if there is a plastic trash can, remove it from the room
  • Do not turn on the vent you do not have workers comp, let laura know if Lydia is not present
  • Do not play with heavy metals #cancer
  • No drain on water eye thing because smart way to isolate and clean contaminated water —> will have trough that we will stand in then spill water
  • Flat files for us yayyyy —> many things will be labeled, label everything, we will double up
  • Extra ladders in corner, please let lydia know so she can help you!
  • Plastic blue bin is for aerosol containers! Easy to open with metal tight lid
  • We will not be using metal red can, any oil rags must go in there —> let lydia know if theres no bag in it
  • Sediment traps! We will not touch these. Filters with pebble, sand —> the sink will build water and drain slowly with bubbles, this means the system is doing its job —> let Lydia know if there are no bubbles or no draining —> also filters charcoal, paint, and aggregates etc —> the sink on the right drains slower
  • Everything will be labeled
  • Wear gloves always! Especially when cleaning/washing/ using anything strong
  • Check the eye washing system at the sink because sometimes its hot water. Lydia will check weekly
  • If any health and safety equipment do not have tags, they have not been officially checked! This is super important
  • Lydia cannot legally administer care to you for liability, you have to give full consent with a witness present
  • Room in back for storage! Still life, extra material. Some things will be rental
  • The black table in the room = clean table. This is the dirtiest it'll ever be. This is where you cut paper
  • A plastic can may be in this room, and stay in this room
  • Put gesso on the ground when using it because messy!
  • Rulers will be behind the door
  • Secret room in secret room is even more extra stuff but she has snacks and coffee!!! —> whoever mskes the pot should clesn it, we should think sbout allergies
  • Figure drawing closet had strict rules! Boundary and protections yayyy
  • Any drink in this room must have a closed lid. Straws okay as long as closed container. No esting in this space thsts why go to pther room
  • Make sure door is closed if someone is oil painting
  • Still figuring out dial for vent, pretty much have it turned on whenever youre painting. If material is closed snd put away, you should be okay to turn off

DEMO

  • board cleaning: the paper is always the tenant, make sure the board is always clean
  • Basic stretch of paper, not true but functional: tape it on the board, 1/4 section of tape covered on paper —> called dry stretch
  • You want to leave a boarder for framing purposes when u place your tape
  • Directly paint from tube, you reactivate it with water
  • Downside: need more materials, upside can make bigger washes —> fine to just use brush but can use palette knife with dry paint
  • Wet on wet: great for transitions between color - broad spectrum color - used for backgrounds - wet layer and wet brush
  • Wet the page before you start
  • Value the white of the paper #1 concern when working! Always think of this first cause u can never get white again
  • Always tilt water towards you when doing a wash
  • Dye is stronger than pigment, ink is saturated
  • Wet on dry: wet brush on dry layer —> how is the wash gonna affect the layer, graphic in nature + sophisticated coloring
  • Pen + wash: used for underdrawings for work, natural contrast, natural edge quality (wet on wet technique can be used but will still maintain boundary) pen create value planes + hash marks with not even using paint!
  • Blotting affect(think about paper first) if area is over saturated, we can add wet clean brush and paper towel to lift color - lifting off color as erasure or shading tool
  • Invisible ink!!!?!! Eraser pen good for intense sketch that will not show the line later bc #heat
  • Pencil, messy fun
  • Watercolor is about how it activates and relates to paper

Questions
- How do u determine when to do a wet or dry stretch?
